Since our opening just a year ago, Assemble, a community space for arts + technology in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood, has strived to create a vibrant, fun, creative environment for our local community members and visitors from all over the city. Through our many programs and events, we unite artists, technologists, and makers with our neighbors of all demographics. Assemble provides a platform for experiential learning, opening creative processes and building confidence through making.
Free to low-cost programs for neighborhood children are an integral part of our organization’s work. Through our youth programs, we aim to make art, science, and technology fun and accessible for kids of all ages by bringing in local resources and ‘experts’ for fun and educational workshops. We have even showcased I Made It! Market artists and hosted the Craft-a-Tron!
Our most recent project, the Saturday Crafternoon series, has been a particularly successful example of our youth programs. On Saturday Crafternoons, local crafters and artists facilitate free craft workshops and hands-on activities for neighborhood children. These projects give kids unique opportunities to make connections with grown-up makers, learn new skills, and have fun while exploring their creativity. Crafternoons are always drop-in events, meaning that kids (either alone, or with their friends, siblings, parents, etc.) can stop by at any time between 1 and 4 pm to complete a project or participate in a fun activity at their own pace.
As the series has grown more successful, the Saturday Crafternoons has accommodated an increase in participants with crafty little fingers and interested expert crafters! In order to sustain our efforts, the I Made It! Market is teaming up with us for the Holiday Market on November 30 and December first. As a conscious member of the making-DIY community, Assemble aims to help people, especially the kids from our neighborhood, to have access to these important skills and crafty role models. As a catalyst of wonder, this series will remain free with your help and donations! We will be collecting donations of $2 at the door of the IMI on Friday and Saturday. If you are interested in donated more, let us know! Assemble is a 501c3 Tax Exempt Non-Profit. Every bit is helps! If interested in getting involved, we would love to have you join the team! We are a 100% volunteer run organization with spunk and spirit!
