Dystopian Tape

My name is Shawn Stiller, and I am a senior at Chartiers Valley High School. As part of my Senior Project, I am experimenting with a fusion of artistry and entrepreneurship by making and selling duct tape crafts. I suspect that I’ll be embarrassingly short on stock since this is my first craft show ever and I don’t have any sort of clue how many people will show up.
One long study hall 1 1/2 years ago, I was thinking of some way to keep myself busy during the short moments that would have been otherwise wasted during school, like the time between when I understood a concept and when the teacher stopped explaining it. I decided on something I remembered from the previous year, when I was friends with a girl who made various things out of duct tape, like flowers and even a purse. That day, I looked up some designs for duct tape crafts and studied them fervently. Soon after, the first roll of red duct tape came off the shelf at the store. Several English classes and free roses for friends later, I came up with my design for the roses and keep improving. I expanded with the concept of duct tape fabric and eight rolls later I had made a double sided, wearable trench coat.
Today I am proud to say that with enough tape, I can make just about anything that does not need to be fully solid or use energy. You can view some of my other work at dustdystopia.deviantart.com.
