After graduating from Syracuse University in 2006 Jeff Schwarz spent the first year out
of graduate school establishing a studio and digesting the graduate school experience.
In the fall of 2008, Jeff accepted a position with KEYS Americorps at the first Carnegie
Library in Braddock, Pennsylvania. While at the library Jeff helped establish North
America’s first water filter research center. The low-tech water filter is a combination
of clay and sawdust, and then fired to burn away the sawdust. The firing process creates
a capillary system and finally the filters are treated with colloidal silver. Schwarz first
came in contact with the water filters during his undergraduate studies. The water filters
have been proven to be 99.9% effective in removing bacteria from dirty drinking water.
Schwarz is currently aiding groups in Haiti, Uganda and Ecuador in the execution of
water filter factories. Also, in the fall of 2008, Jeff accepted an adjunct position at the
Community College of Allegheny County teaching ceramics, drawing and art history.
While teaching and helping to promote the ceramic water filter, Schwarz has continued
in his studio. He has continued to exhibit nationally and internationally. Recently, he
was included in an exhibition entitled Affinity in Korea and is now represented by the
Christine Frechard gallery.
