Wren & Rita
Wren & Rita came to be after I found myself at home, full time, with a new baby. I filtered much of the energy that I had previously put into my career into knitting and sewing. I started making gifts for my family and friends, and because of their positive feedback (and special orders) decided to expand and offer my handmade items to everyone. I now spend much of my free time at my sewing machine making handbags and wristlets. I enjoy using upcycled sweaters in several of my items, such as the front zipper hipster bag and using fabric scraps to make fabric covered button accessories.
Originally from Portugal, I grew up around my great aunt who was a seamstress and cousins that were tailors and owned a fabric shop in our town. My grandmothers taught me to crochet at an early age, and I taught myself to knit and sew while in college along with bead and jewelry making. As a young girl I was also obsessed with latch hook and loved the feeling I got when I finished a project. I still get that same giddy feeling today.
I love supporting local and handmade, and Pittsburgh is a great place to do it. Not only am I buying something that is likely one of a kind but it’s made by someone who is my neighbor.
My work can be found in my etsy shop (http://wrenandrita.etsy.com) and also at the soon to open WildCard in Lawrenceville.
